Spring 2007 Fashion Trends

After the moody, broody looks for fall, designers are clearing the air for spring with easy, breezy, feminine clothes. The spring 2007 shows contained bold oppositions: couture silhouettes versus sporty, body-conscious basics; futurism versus historical grandeur. What worked throughout? Clothes beautifully made with great care and effort, but that when worn, look entirely effortless: the dress that zips and goes, the tanks that layer haphazardly, the tailored jackets that add polish to any ensemble. Spring 2007 is all about making a statement with a touch of wit and drama. The star of the season, however, is the dress. Dresses marched down the fashion runways in ultra-feminine silhouettes and came in a kaleidoscope of shapes and styles.

The key piece for spring 2007 is taking its cue from a classic Audrey Hepburn look - with A-line shapes and minimal luxury fabrics - but adding a bit of a "Paris Hilton personality" with strapless tops and other sexy accents. Shoppers will have their pick of dress silhouettes, since so many versions have been offered, including shifts, sacks, wraps, sundresses, and halters. The important factor of the dress is to make the lady look like a lady. Ruffles as well as some rather voluminous silhouettes and playful larger-than-life rosettes are details that predominate in the spring collections.

Other items that will prove to be must haves for spring include trench and trapeze coats, blouses with angel sleeves, walking shorts, miniskirts and even bold distinctive accessories. The chemise with off the shoulder layering, the cropped boxy jacket with wide neckline details and, the bell skirt will be items to update any woman’s spring wardrobe. Trousers are still around, but they're mostly very skinny or soft and wide and not the major building blocks of your wardrobe any longer.

Colors for the season remain soft and neutral with opal grey being the new basic. Splashes of yellows, corals, and purples create spring in bloom. These accents can make the most basic outfit come alive. As with most seasons, this season's colors are not entirely new but have evolved from the winter’s collection of stronger grays and browns. Spring collections will contain a greater variety of the neutrals and rely on colors for accents.

How do you start? Nothing works unless the silhouette is strong. It is best to start with one piece and build around that. Listing the hot trends for spring is enough to give anyone a fashion migraine: frills, ruffles, pompoms, pleats, bows, obi belts, brass buttons, and grosgrain ribbon. The story of the season can be summed up in four little words: One at a time. Although most of the season's dresses are one piece, if you are wearing separates, start with the trend setting piece and add basics to it to complete the ensemble. One great belt can update your look. On a day when it is too much to suck in your stomach, a bow, slightly raised above the waist, is an easy substitute.

Overall, spring 2007 collections feature designs that pack pretty with a punch. Spring 2007 will be more graceful and womanly, less girly and sexy. Women can enjoy being women!
